Easter, considered the greatest feast day in the Christian calendar, is a moveable feast, which means that it falls on a different date each year. Easter always falls on a Sunday, but Easter Sunday can be as early as March 22 and as late as April 25.

When Is Easter 2019?

Easter in 2019 will be celebrated on Sunday, April 21. Good Friday is always the Friday preceding Easter. It will fall on April 19.

How Is the Date of Easter Determined?

The Easter date formula dictates that is always the first Sunday after the first full moon that falls on or after March 21.

The Orthodox Church sometimes diverges from other Christian denominations when calculating the date of Easter because the Orthodox Church bases its Easter date calculation on the Julian calendar. Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic and Protestant Christian churches base their Easter date formula on the Gregorian calendar (the common calendar used daily).

Some people suggest that setting of the date of Easter is tied to Passover. This is not the case. The dates of Easter and Passover being adjacent is indicative of the fact that Jesus was Jewish. He celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples on the first day of Passover.
