Were You a Cradle Catholic or a Convert?

Cradle Catholic

How Old Were You When You Left the Catholic Church?

I quit practicing when I was 15.

How Old Were You When You Returned to Catholicism?

I was 34 when I went back to Mass on a regular basis.

Why I Left the Catholic Church

I never officially "left the Church." There wasn't any incentive when we moved to Kentucky. My mom made no effort, and, being in the South, Catholicism wasn't predominant.

Why I Returned to Catholicism

I knew in my heart I was Catholic. I had a boyfriend who said that he would never be married in the Catholic Church, and that seriously bothered me. (In spite of not practicing my faith, I didn't marry him.) My husband is a cradle Catholic who also fell away from the regular attendance of Mass. We both knew that when we had children we would return. And we did. When our daughter was old enough, we put her in Sunday school and started attending Mass regularly.

Advice

  • Do not give up on the Catholic Church!

Scott P. Richert, Catholicism Guide, says:

Changes in our religious practices often occur in conjunction with other changes in our lives—moving to a new place; getting married; having children. Even if those changes take us away from Catholicism, the Catholic Church is always ready to receive us back.
