Many of the staple foods of Lent are chock full of carbohydrates—pasta, bread, potatoes. Abstinence from meat can present a real challenge to those (myself included) who find that more carbs equals more weight. While the point of our Lenten fasting is different from dieting, it still seems a bit odd to end Lent a few pounds heavier than when we started.
