Holy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter, is a great day of celebration for the Catholic Church as a whole, because it was on Holy Thursday, at the Last Supper, that Christ instituted the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. For that reason, it is also an especially important day for all men who have been ordained to the priesthood. Without the Mass, the priesthood would be just another job with long hours and poor pay.
Today marks the Octave of Holy Thursday, the eighth day since the Mass of the Lord's Supper. It is, therefore, an appropriate day to turn our minds to the desperate need for vocations in the Catholic Church. Better yet, starting today, we can make a Prayer for Vocations to the Priestly and Religious Life a regular part of our daily prayers. May God grant us the priests that we need!
