Novena of the Week: In Honor of Saint Scholastica

By February 1, 2013

Follow me on:

In our novena this week, we honor the twin sister of Saint Benedict of Nursia, founder of the Benedictine order and Western monasticism and the patron saint of Europe. Saint Scholastica, however, did not live her life in her more famous brother's shadow. Indeed, some contemporary writers credit her with inspiring Saint Benedict to found the monastery at Monte Cassino; Saint Scholastica led a community of nuns about five miles away.

In any case, Saint Scholastica's own life was characterized by holiness, and in this Prayer in Honor of Saint Scholastica, we ask God to grant us the grace to live our lives in imitation of Saint Scholastica's virtues. Saint Scholastica's feast day is February 10; begin this novena on February 1 to end it on the eve of her feast.

If you have a favorite novena that you'd like me to choose as Novena of the Week, or if you'd like me to suggest a novena for a particular intention, send me an e-mail, and I'll work it into the rotation.
