Our novena of the week is a Novena to St. Charles Borromeo (1538-84), one of the towering figures of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. This cardinal-archbishop's zeal for the Catholic Faith and Catholic education was matched by his humility and his personal care for plague victims in Milan in 1576-77.
As we recall Pope Benedict's 2009 overtures to Anglicans who wish to return home to Rome, we have hope that the Church torn apart by the Reformation may again be one, as Christ prayed. If you have no personal request for this week's novena, consider offering it for the cause of Christian unity.
The feast day of St. Charles Borromeo is November 4; if you begin this novena on October 26, you will complete in on the eve of his feast.
St. Charles Borromeo, filled with zeal for Christ and His Church, pray for us!
