I skipped Wordless Wednesday last week, because I was too wrapped up in writing "Why Richard Dawkins Cannot Stomach the Eucharist." Therefore, I did not announce the winner of the previous week's contest.

Nancy Parode, the About.com Guide to Senior Travel, got one of the symbols found in the stained-glass window of Saint Simon the Zealot in the very first comment. Top honors, however, are split between readers Michael and Martha, who between them identified all of the symbols and offered explanations for most. You can find their answers in the comments.

There will be no contest this week but a solemn prayer on this Veterans Day for all those who have served our country.

I totally agree, Scott. Today is a day to remember all who have served in the distant and recent past, and for me, also a day to remember those who are serving right now. Prayer, reflection, honor, and gratitude are the least we can do.

It is definitely a good day to reflect on those who serve, especially considering recent events in Afghanistan and even at Fort Hood which bring home the danger our troops are in physically and mentally as they serve our country.

What a nice tribute to our veterans! I love going to cemeteries (it’s a German Catholic thing). We’ve been lucky enough to get to my great-uncle’s (military cemetery) gravesite in Italy twice. I agree with you, it is very important to pray for and honor our veterans.

It’s my prayer that focusing on the sacrifices of our veterans might lead us into more peaceful resolutions In war every one loses.

Thanks for posting something about Veteran’s Day. My father, FIL, and both grandfathers were/are all vets.
