HLI's "Pro-Life Dos and Don'ts for 2009"

Follow me on:

Fr. Thomas Euteneuer, the courageous president of Human Life International, one of the two best national pro-life organizations, puts out a weekly e-mail newsletter called Spirit & Life. Last week, during the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., he dedicated the newsletter to "Pro-Life Dos and Don'ts for 2009."

His points will seem familiar to those who read my articles last week on "What Will Barack Obama Do as President?" and "Will Roe v. Wade Ever Be Overturned?" There's a growing consensus among the most committed pro-lifers that we're unlikely ever to reach a political solution to the question of abortion; what's needed is cultural change to counteract the widespread acceptance of abortion in the United States.

Father Euteneuer offers three Don'ts and three corresponding Dos:

DON'TS:
  1. Above all, do not grow despondent
  2. Do not become absorbed in the quest for a political solution to abortion
  3. Do not waste any more energy on overturning Roe
DOS:
  1. Pray every day for God to end abortion with our help (in that order)
  2. Commit to fasting every week to end the evils of abortion and contraception
  3. Take back the culture
In his newsletter (archived online), Father Euteneuer expands on each of his Dos and Don'ts, and I encourage you to read them--and then to put them into action. In one month, Lent will start, and there's no better time to commit ourselves to prayer and fasting to change the culture and bring about an end to the slaughter of unborn children. Father Euteneuer's suggestions for how to take back the culture would make very good Lenten exercises, too.

There is no quick and easy solution to the problem of abortion, and it's time that we quit acting as if there were one. The burden falls on our shoulders, every day, to take the positive steps necessary to fight the spiritual battle and change the hearts and minds of our fellow citizens.

I really like the message that Catholicvote.com promoted in their latest commercial spot. It focuses on the positive aspects of choosing life, instead of constantly beating people over the heads with the negatives of abortion, which I think most pro-choice advocates are deaf to now. Make a choice for the future, by choosing life.

Along with prayer and fasting, don’t forget to go to carenet and look for their clinics near you.
Donate to the with cash, diapers, formula and any other items they might need.
If you have some time, pray seriously about volunteering at the clinics.

Who cares if abortion is legal if no one wants to have an abortion! Let’s support these babies and put our money and time to good use – not to protest abortion, but to save babies and their moms!

Karen, I can heartily endorse your suggestion of contacting Care Net (http://www.care-net.org). It was founded by Harold O.J. Brown, a friend and colleague who passed away a year and a half ago.

From the beginning, Care Net (found as the Christian Action Council) had the right approach: Political action is necessary, but prayer and direct attempts at saving babies through crisis-pregnancy centers were the way that Christians would change the culture.
