P.Z. Myers' desecration of the Eucharist in July continued to send out ripples into August 2008. As the election season heated up in the United States, another controversy over the Eucharist arose: Should Catholic politicians, such as Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden, who support abortion receive Communion? Meanwhile, some Catholics questioned the pick of the pro-life Sarah Palin (a former Catholic) as the Republican vice presidential candidate, suggesting that the Church has traditionally valued the role of wife and mother over political office.
